What is protein powder?

Protein powder is a concentrated protein source, dried into a powder you mix with water or milk. Most are made from milk, either whey or casein, or from plants such as pea, rice or almond. A typical serve provides 20–30 g of protein, which is roughly what you would get from 100 g of cooked chicken breast, in something that keeps in the cupboard and takes twenty seconds to make.

People generally use it to top up daily protein intake when food alone is inconvenient: after training, between meals, or on days that get away from them. For context, the Australian Nutrient Reference Values set the recommended dietary intake for protein at 0.84 g per kg of body weight per day for adult men and 0.75 g per kg for adult women. The International Society of Sports Nutrition's position stand suggests a higher intake, 1.4–2.0 g per kg per day, for people doing regular resistance training. Both are linked under Sources below.

Protein powder for your goal

The type matters more than the brand. Match it to what you are actually trying to do:

  • Everyday training and value: whey protein concentrate sits around 70–80% protein, and the carbohydrate and fat left in from the milk is where a lot of the flavour comes from.
  • Lean goals and watching kilojoules: whey protein isolate is filtered further – typically 90%+ protein by weight, with very little carbohydrate, fat or lactose left.
  • Dairy-free or vegan: vegan and plant protein is made from pea, rice, almond or a blend of them, and usually carries more fibre per serve than whey.
  • Struggling to eat enough: lean mass gainers add carbohydrate to the protein, so one serve carries several times the energy of a plain protein shake.
  • Overnight or between meals: casein and custard protein digests slowly, releasing over hours rather than minutes.
  • Something lighter after cardio: protein water is clear whey isolate – it mixes thin and fruity instead of creamy, and is usually fat-free.
  • Eating on the go: protein bars and snacks and ready-to-drink shakes do the same job without a shaker.

How to choose a protein powder

  • Start with the type, not the brand. Every major brand makes a good concentrate and a good isolate; the type decides how it fits your day.
  • Check the protein per serve. Most whey and plant proteins land between 20 and 30 g. Read the nutrition panel rather than the front of the tub.
  • Compare the cost per serve. A larger tub is almost always cheaper per shake, so work out the price per serve before comparing two tubs on sticker price.
  • Account for lactose. Isolate is filtered lower in lactose than concentrate, and plant protein has none at all.
  • Pick a flavour you will finish. You will be drinking it most days. Most ranges sell a smaller size, which is the cheap way to find out whether you like it.

Compare the range

TypeUsually chosen forWhat makes it different
WPC Everyday use and value Around 70–80% protein by weight; keeps more of the carbohydrate and fat from milk, which is where a lot of the flavour sits
Whey Protein Isolates Lower-carb and lower-lactose preferences Filtered further than WPC, typically 90%+ protein by weight with very little lactose left
Vegan & Plant Protein Dairy-free and vegan diets Pea, rice, almond or a blend of them; no dairy, and usually more fibre per serve
Lean Mass Gainers Higher daily kilojoule targets Protein plus added carbohydrate, so a serve carries several times the energy of a plain protein
Protein Water A lighter, juice-style drink Clear whey isolate; mixes thin and fruity rather than creamy, and is usually fat-free
Collagen Protein Anyone after a collagen peptide source Hydrolysed collagen, with a different amino acid profile to whey, notably low in leucine, so it is generally used alongside a whey or plant protein rather than instead of one.
Protein Bars & Snacks Eating on the go No shaker needed.

Frequently asked questions

How much protein powder should I have in a day?

That depends on your body weight and how much protein you are already getting from food. The Australian Nutrient Reference Values put the adult recommended dietary intake at 0.84 g per kg per day for men and 0.75 g per kg for women; the ISSN position stand suggests 1.4–2.0 g per kg per day for people training regularly. Most people use one or two serves a day to cover the gap between what they eat and what they are aiming for. If you would like that worked out properly for you, our nutritionist can help.
