What is a hydration ready to drink?

Hydration RTDs are pre mixed electrolyte drinks, supplying sodium, potassium and often magnesium in a bottle rather than a powder you mix. Most are low in sugar or sugar free, which distinguishes them from traditional sports drinks that carried carbohydrate as fuel as well as electrolytes.

They make the most sense where plain water alone is not quite enough: long or hot sessions, heavy sweating, physical outdoor work, endurance events, or recovering from a heavy night. For an ordinary hour in an air conditioned gym, water and a normal diet cover it, and a hydration drink is a convenience rather than a need.

How they are usually used

Drunk before, during or after a session where you expect to sweat heavily, or through the day in hot conditions. Check the sodium per bottle, since that is the mineral lost in the largest amount in sweat and the figure that varies most between products.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an electrolyte drink for a normal workout?

Usually not. Under about an hour in mild conditions, water covers it and your meals supply the minerals. These drinks earn their place in long sessions, hot weather, heavy sweating and endurance events.

Are hydration drinks the same as sports drinks?

Not quite. Traditional sports drinks combine electrolytes with a meaningful amount of carbohydrate for fuel. Most modern hydration drinks are low sugar and supply minerals only. If you need fuel for a long session as well as fluid, check the carbohydrate figure.

Is a bottle better than a powder?

Only on convenience. A powder is far cheaper per serve and lets you control the concentration. A bottle requires nothing and is ready in a bag or a car. Many people keep powder at home and bottles for when they are out.

Which electrolyte matters most?

Sodium. It is lost in the greatest quantity in sweat and it governs fluid retention. A product with a long mineral list but very little sodium is mostly flavour.

Can I drink these every day?

You can, though you are adding sodium to a diet likely to contain plenty already. If you work outdoors or sweat heavily that is reasonable. If you have high blood pressure or have been told to watch salt, check with your doctor first.
