What does athlete safe mean?

Athlete safe refers to products that have been batch tested by an independent programme for substances banned in sport. In Australia the main programme is HASTA, and Informed Sport is the common international equivalent. Testing is done batch by batch, and the certificate applies to that batch rather than to the brand as a whole.

This matters because supplements are not required to be tested for banned substances before sale, and contamination during manufacture is a documented problem. Under anti-doping rules, strict liability applies: an athlete is responsible for what is in their body regardless of how it got there, and not knowing a product was contaminated is not a defence. What is batch testing?

An independent laboratory tests a specific production batch for substances on the banned list, and that batch is then certified. It reduces risk substantially, but it certifies the batch tested rather than every batch a brand ever makes, which is why checking your own batch number matters.
