What is in gym accessories?

The equipment that goes in a gym bag rather than on the gym floor: lifting straps, wrist wraps, knee sleeves, belts, gloves, chalk and liquid chalk, resistance bands, skipping ropes and bag essentials. Most of it exists to solve one specific problem rather than to improve training generally.

Worth knowing what each actually does, because they are often confused. Straps fix grip, so your hands stop limiting what your back can pull. Wrist wraps support the wrist joint under pressing loads. Knee sleeves add warmth and compression rather than bracing. A belt gives your abdominal muscles something to brace against on heavy lifts. Buying the wrong one for your problem is the usual mistake.

How they are usually used

Most of these are for your heavier working sets rather than everything you do. Using straps on every pulling set means your grip never gets stronger, and wearing a belt for light warm ups defeats the point of bracing. Save them for the sets where the limitation actually shows up.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between lifting straps and wrist wraps?

Straps wrap around the bar and take grip out of the equation, so they help with pulling movements such as deadlifts and rows. Wrist wraps support the wrist joint itself and help with pressing, such as bench press and overhead work. They solve opposite problems and are frequently bought by mistake.

Should I use a lifting belt?

A belt gives you something to brace your abdominal muscles against, which can help on heavy squats and deadlifts. It is not a back support and it will not protect poor technique. Most people are better off learning to brace without one first, then adding it for heavy work.

Do knee sleeves protect my knees?

Sleeves provide warmth and compression, which many people find makes squatting more comfortable. They are not braces and do not stabilise a knee with an actual injury. If your knee hurts, that warrants assessment rather than a sleeve.

Chalk or liquid chalk?

Liquid chalk is less messy, lasts longer per application, and is permitted in many gyms that ban block chalk. Block chalk grips slightly better and is cheaper. Check your gym's rules, since plenty do not allow loose chalk.

Will straps stop my grip getting stronger?

If you use them for everything, yes, since your grip never has to work. The usual approach is to train without straps until grip becomes the limiting factor, then use them for your heaviest sets so your back can keep working.
