Drinks and snacks

This is the convenience end of the range: protein bars and snacks, protein shakes in a bottle, energy cans, hydration drinks and the broader healthy snack category. Everything here is ready to use, with nothing to measure, mix or wash.

You pay a premium for that convenience, several times the cost per gram of protein compared with a tub of powder. Whether that is worth it depends on whether the alternative is a home made shake or nothing at all. For a lot of people these products are what stops a long day ending in a servo pie, which is a real contribution even at the price.

How they are usually used

As planned parts of your intake rather than extras on top, since the kilojoules are real food kilojoules. Read the panel rather than the front of the pack, because terms like natural and healthy are not regulated.

Compare the range

TypeUsually chosen forWhat makes it different
Protein Bars & Snacks Protein with no preparation Usually 15 to 25 g of protein. Watch total kilojoules and sugar alcohols if you bloat easily.
Protein RTDs A shake with no shaker 20 to 40 g per bottle. Shelf stable versions are the genuinely useful kind for a bag or a car.
Energy RTDs Pre-workout you do not mix Caffeine, commonly 150 to 300 mg a can. Mostly sugar free now. Count it towards your daily total.
Hydration RTDs Electrolytes ready to drink For long or hot sessions and heavy sweating. Check the sodium figure, which is what actually matters.
Healthy Snacks & RTDs The wider convenience range Protein chips, cookies, nut butters and low sugar confectionery. Best as swaps rather than additions.

Frequently asked questions

Are RTDs worth the price over powder?

Per gram of protein, powder wins easily. What you buy with the premium is that there is nothing to mix, carry or wash. If convenience is the thing that stops you hitting your protein, the premium is doing real work.

Does high protein mean healthy?

No. Protein is one figure on a panel, and a high protein snack can still be energy dense. Look at kilojoules, protein, sugar and fibre together rather than at the claim on the front.

Why do protein bars upset my stomach?

Usually sugar alcohols such as maltitol, or added soluble fibre. Both ferment in the gut and cause gas and bloating in sensitive people. Bars sweetened with stevia and using whole food binders are generally easier.

How much caffeine is in an energy can?

Typically 150 to 300 mg, which spans a strong coffee to most of a day's guideline in one go. It varies widely between brands, so read the can rather than assuming.

Can these replace meals?

Mostly not. They are built as snacks and lack the carbohydrate, fat and micronutrient spread of a meal. If you need a meal substitute, a product formulated for that job is the better choice.
