What is a protein ready to drink?

A protein RTD is a pre mixed protein shake in a bottle or can, usually supplying 20 to 40 g of protein. Most are milk protein or whey based, with plant based versions widely available. They are sold chilled or shelf stable, and the shelf stable ones are the genuinely useful kind for a gym bag or a car.

You pay a premium for the convenience, several times the cost per gram of protein compared with a tub of powder. What you get for it is no mixing, no clumps, no shaker to wash and no measuring, which for a lot of people is the difference between hitting their protein target on a busy day and not.

How they are usually used

Straight from the bottle, most often after training, as a breakfast on the move, or kept in a bag for long days. Shelf stable versions do not need refrigerating until opened, though most taste considerably better cold.

Frequently asked questions

Are RTDs as good as mixing your own protein powder?

Nutritionally they are comparable, and the protein sources are the same. The differences are cost, which is substantially higher per gram, and ingredients, since RTDs need stabilisers and thickeners to stay drinkable on a shelf. If convenience is what stops you hitting your protein, the premium is doing real work.

Do protein RTDs need to be refrigerated?

Shelf stable ones do not until opened, which is the point of them. Chilled varieties from a fridge should stay refrigerated. Once opened, drink it or refrigerate it and finish it within a day.

How much protein is in one?

Commonly 20 to 40 g per bottle, which is a larger serve than a typical scoop of powder. Check the bottle size as well, since the protein figure is sometimes quoted per 100 ml rather than per bottle.

Are there plant based RTDs?

Yes, generally pea and rice based. They are usually thicker than dairy versions and have a more pronounced flavour, so trying a single bottle before buying a case is sensible.

Can I drink one as a meal replacement?

A protein RTD is mostly protein, so it does not cover a meal's carbohydrate, fat and micronutrients. As an occasional stand in it is fine; as a routine meal replacement, a product formulated for that job is the better choice.
